RAID 1+0 data recovery

RAID 1+0 known also as RAID 10.The RAID array is realized by RAID 0 as a combination of RAID 1 matrix. Comparing to RAID 0+1 it is easy to find that the same concept (fast RAID 0 and safety of RAID 1) is realized but in a different way. RAID 1+0 is mirrored sets in a striped set. The key difference from RAID 0+1 is that RAID 1+0 creates a striped set from a series of mirrored drives. In a failed disk situation, RAID 1+0 performs better because all the remaining disks continue to be used.


Controller Requirements: almost all controllers can work in configuration RAID 0+1 or RAID 1+0 but not always in both
Hard Disk Requirements: maximum is limited by controller, to build RAID 0+1 minimum 4 discs is needed, all drivers should be the same size
Array Capacity: size of the smallest drive*number of drives /2
Storage Efficiency: if all the drives are the same size it is 50%
Fault tolerance: excellent for RAID 1+0 and very good for RAID 0+1
Availability: excellent for RAID 1+0 and very good for RAID 0+1
Degradation and rebuilding: relatively little
Random read performance: very good
Random write performance: good
Sequential read performance: very good
Sequential write performance: good
