Tape Backup Storage
Tertiary Storage also
known as tertiary memory, is a computer storage comprised of one or more storage
drives and an automatic media library, for example a tape library or optical disc
jukebox. It is often used for archival of rarely accessed information. To read information
from the tertiary storage, a computer consults a catalog database to determine which
tape or disc contains the information, and the computer sends request to robotic
arm to fetch the medium and place it in a drive. After computer has finished reading
the information, the robotic arm takes up the medium and places it back to the library.
Tertiary storage is usually used in the fields of enterprise storage and scientific
computing on large computer systems and business computer networks.
